Colchester Eastern Approaches Bridges |

Approximately £10m |
This project comprises a road over rail bridge and a road over river bridge. Both structures span
about 36m and carry two lanes of highway, two footways and a cycle track. Because the bridges are highly
skew, they are very wide structures. In the case of the river bridge, the span between banks was reduced
from an original span of 70m by building new cofferdams into the river and reducing the navigable width.
The design of both used welded plate steel girders spanning between reinforced concrete abutments on
piles bored under bentonite. These major civil engineering structures were entirely designed and
conceived by P L Ross who also provided the architectural concept seen here in the painting, which can
be compared to the finished product.
